in which there is intertextuality

Hmmm. Bath Tangle wasn't quite as satisfying as I'd hoped. I mean, the board was set up, the players positioned and there was indeed a very passionate resolution ... but nope, not quite as fizzy and wonderful in complications or characterisations or verbal exchanges as it could have been. All that detail of politics and social scandal? Too much verisimilitude, Heyer. So not interesting. I was with Fanny on that one.

Mind you, I did have the sudden lightbulb thought of "It's The Philadelphia Story! Tall mannish shrewish aristocratic redhead in power to a dark satirical former love who's constantly arguing with her, getting herself engaged to a respectable man of the people." And it was written in 1955, too. *nods and taps nose*

Mind you, I did also think "It's Jane Eyre! Strong willed girl torn between dark satirical type and golden respectable type." Only that didn't quite work on any counts except for our hero having similar eyebrows to Rochester which is prolly what made me think of it in the first place. Whoops.

I can post about things other than Heyer, you know. I just don't want to. *beams*

Well, no, I started to read Persuasion on the train down to Blacktown on the weekend. I got eighteen pages in before bursting out with "Oh for fuck's sake, Austen, employ a freaking full stop!" Ten minutes later I was giggling over Heyer. What to do? Why should I torture myself with Austen when I could be giggling over Heyer?

Still, realisation had today: Heyer = Austen + Wodehouse = FTW!

I think I missed the blackout in the CBD this arvo by like half an hour. God, I hope there weren't any courts going at the time. Eek.

love this city, film, bronte, heyer, books, hepburn, reviews, austen
