ain't nobody

Went with the family friend to see Dostana at Chatswood Mandarin today. For once, we made it there and back without getting horrendously lost and actually getting to see the movie. Also, without me erupting into pure rage because of lateness or the holes in her brain.

I've been so into Indian food this week. I don't know why, maybe because it's comfort food, maybe because of the sudden rainy weather, maybe because the Aunt's there at the moment. Or maybe because it's been a while.

Anyway, god, that little Indian diner in the Mandarin food court is excellent. So impressed that he actually made the naan fresh there in front of us. And perfect it was too. Realised it's only in Indian food that I can have an entirely vegetarian meal without protest or even noticing. And not in terms of mixed vegetable curry or whatever the bloody hell that is. All about the fried starch, baby. Two vegetable samosas, one onion bhaji, one plain naan. And one plain lassi. For the win.

It was a little odd, Dostana. Odd in that way of not sure whether to laugh or be offended at the stereotypes. But for what it's worth, I did appreciate what a difficult job they had of presenting two faux homosexuals as protagonists without pissing everybody off, and sort of gently educating the masses while not taking themselves too seriously. Thing is I think I did sort of wish they had taken it a little more seriously but that would be way too risky for a mainstream Bollywood film with three extremely high profile mainstream Bollywood actors who rake in a hell of a lot of money.

As it was, I was quite surprised to see they didn't tie it up neatly in terms of pairing the two guys off with girls in the little epilogue. In fact, they even went the other way with hinting. And yeah, I was quite disappointed that the kiss actually happened in classic filmi style, the coy averted thing. Which I guess is a clever sort of homage as was a lot of the romance.

Hoo boy, is Yash Raj Productions now getting a bit too self-referential wif the use of the Kabhi Kushie Kabhi Gham highly emotive musical riff and then the actual footage of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Clever and very pop culture but a leetle too close to home and I guess just saved when you realise the use of Taare Zameen Par takes it out of the home productions. Boy, that was funny. And heartbreaking when you realise exactly which song it's invoking.

Mind you, it did throw into stark relief how much sexier a red sari and black shirt when used between Shahrukh and Kajol is compared to a red strapless dress and black shirt used by John Abraham and Priyanka. As hot as I find Priyanka, it is totally that sari and the way it's held out that makes the hotness in that scene. And, you know, Shahrukh actually being so incredibly beautiful, argh, compared to John just looking pained. Holy fuck, that moment.

Never did like John Abraham. He had a few funny moments here but only when forced into total campiness. Totally there for his body that just became nauseating by the end. "Put a shirt on, you tart!" Good thing for him that Abhishek is turning into the Depp of Bollywood in that you cannot take your eyes off him for a second for fear of missing some hilarious nuance of expression. And he's always so intelligent in his acting, that mind is always turned on, always alive and moving so quickly, visible in his eyes and the sheer expressive speed of his face.

Boman's cameo was hysterical and you could totally tell Kirron was having the time of her life, especially in that completely mad completely brilliant song. Oh Kirron, you are never not awesome. Bless. And even the lil kid kinda broke my heart. Less said for Bobby Deol the better, although thank god his hair looks slightly better these days.

And oh man, did I find myself so cheered by Desi Girl. Exactly what I needed to hear, especially when she sings it herself, and totally justified when applied to the absolute real darling gorgeosity of Priyanka, even with her too straight too perfect hair. I love her sari there. Only she could pull that off without looking slutty. Man, I wish I had her eyebrows.

Mmm. Karan's reaction to the reaction. I am glad to hear the gay community in Bombay responded well to it. Was sort of wondering that.

But yay, they played the trailer for the next Shahrukh film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which omigod I totally forgot is an Aditya Chopra creation, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy! I mean, I adored the little teaser anyway. But omigod the full trailer is totally squeeworthy. Oh SRK ... I'm so glad you're finally allowing yourself to be sexy, even/especially when it's taking the piss out of all the young beefcake hotbods. And this new girl, Anushka Sharma, looks adorable. Plus the trailer promises the full emotional gamut which is always awesome. Can't wait!
