Oh Wilde ...

Were you parodying others or yourself? How on earth am I supposed to tell, here and now?

And yet: There was nothing in the world so white as thy body. There was nothing in the world so black as thy hair. In the whole world there was nothing so red as thy mouth.

On every rare occasion I revisit Wilde, Albert Finney murmurs in my head and yet another Velvet Goldmine snippet will spring out at me. Hide the moon! Hide the stars!

And yet, and yet ... on sapphires: The sea wanders within them and the moon never comes to trouble the blue of their waves.

Oh Wilde.

Although one can't help but wonder how much of the overblown imagery owes itself to Bosie's translation. *scowls, eyes suspiciously*
