They say that all it takes to spark a relationship is something small. It can be a hug, a note, or even the slightest of glances. Then it becomes a small fire before it could potentially rage out of control. Or it’s a chemical reaction in the brain that influences one’s thoughts and feelings about another person. At least, that was what Spencer used to believe. His life is run by logic, no by emotions; it was, anyway, until Aaron decided to inadvertently spark something in the youngest agent’s mind.

It was something silly, he would later admit. Aaron would call it adorable.

After a case in 2010, they had all decided to go out to dinner one night. It had been a long case, a hard one as well. There had been captive children, a stuck-up sonofabitch who kept the kids hostage with hardly any food and water, but no fatalities. And now, they were celebrating a slight victory, if anything.

At some point that night, someone had made a joke. Spencer had gotten a little bit of a laugh out of it, and out of sheer curiosity, he had glanced up from his dinner to see if anyone else was chuckling. And that was when the entire world seemed to slow down-if only for him and no one else.

Aaron was smiling. It wasn’t much, but it was still there. That wasn’t even the kicker, either-the fact he looked over at Spencer a moment later with that small grin on his face was enough to get some sort of… Well, he hadn’t a clue what it was, but hell. It was enough to make him feel like it was something special. Maybe it was butterflies. Or maybe it was relief. To know that Aaron still had it in him to smile? If that was the case after all the pain and trauma he had to go through?

Well. Damn it all, he could smile too.

It was that night that Spencer Reid made a silent promise to himself. He would try to make his boss smile whenever possible. After a case, during office hours-somehow, he would get the stoic leader to smirk once in a while.

He’s been pretty successful the past fifteen months since that night.
