Maybe this year will be better than the last

As much as I complain and as much as I say I hate things a lot, I really did have a pretty good 2008. Yah a lot of really shitty things happened the most traumatic being of course that a 7 year friendship ended without any warning or reason, but I've survived. Such great things happened in spite. I went to Vegas 5 times last year! The best one to bring mama back to San Antonio and that was awesome! My sister got married to a wonderful man and is super happy. I also started grad school which while a lot of the times makes me want to shoot myself in the head, for the most part I'm just super excited I went back to school- I totally missed it. I go back to school on Monday and I'm excited. Last semester sucked because my classes were so tough but this semester should be so much better and I'm rested so hopefully I can have a fresh start.

Thursday I had an awesome day at work, a day that made me sit back and say "this is why I'm in student activities". I absolutely hate speaking in public I should totally not be allowed to speak in front of groups of people greater than 5 or less than 2 because its just bad news bears. But this semester my boss is having us run a part of new student orientation or freshmen days and I have to give a short 30 minute little keynote with power point and a couple of videos in it. We got the program from a really awesome company so its not like I even had to put the thing together, but still the thought of me having to get up and present this program to 150 freshmen made me sick to my stomach. So I stressed and worried and wrote up note cards and prepared- then it came time for me to do my little speech I barely even looked at the note cards, the kids laughed and we got through it without any major technical difficulties. I totally didn't think that would happen. Then last in the afternoon we have another little 30 minute session with the classes divided up into smaller groups so we can get them organized and students came up to me and asked me more questions about the topic of my talk and they remembered my name and asked for my email- it was so cool! I've totally experienced little moments like that before at my job, but nothing to the scale of this and I still get to do it 3 more times. Our little orientation deal has to do with how to use MySpace and Facebook to be successful- we don't really talk about all the bad things out there but how students everywhere are using the internet and getting jobs, making money and doing all this super cool stuff- one of the clips we show is about that kid Matt who recorded a video of him doing some stupid little dance and traveling the world and then Stride gum came along and said they'd pay him to keep doing it- just stuff like that but its a really neat presentation. The afternoon session we get the students to sign up for this RedRover application on Facebook that connects them to other people with similar interests and it suggests clubs they might like that we have at SAC that share those keywords and stuff. It too is super neat and the students have been pouring in. Today I give my second talk and again I'm kinda nervous but I totally think it'll be worth it and I can't wait till this summer when we get to take over more of new student orientation.
