Gerald and April's long denial aprilp_katje May 25 2007, 15:32:18 UTC
April's monthly letter, August 2004:

Gerald and Becky have been sort of hanging out together while I'm working. Like I don't know what's going on. Ger and I had made a promise not to hook up- not for any of us to hook up because of the band. I hope it's just for "friendship" like Becker says.

She seems very much single in March 2005 when an older boy flirts with her at the movies:

Steve came back into the theatre with us and watched the show again - and he sat next to me the whole time! He kept whispering to let me know when there was a cool part coming up, and he let me have his Junior Mints.

Duncan was totally mad - he phoned me later and kept telling me that Steve's no good, and that no normal guy in grade eleven is going to like someone my age. He was totally acting like my big brother or something, but then he told me that Becky's totally got a bad reputation now, and that if guys are following us around at the movies it's because they think I'm like she is.

Finally in August 2005 we have April and Gerald as a couple, and ( ... )

I don't consider the letters to be canon if they disagree with the strip. But in this case they do explain why Gerald went from kissing April in February, 2003 and being declared as her boyfriend at her April, 2003 birthday party to just a pal for the next 2 years. I suspect someone pointed out to Lynn Johnston that April was just 11 going on 12 at the time. Nevertheless, in the interim period, the letters also talk about April being nervous because Gerald is spending so much time with Becky; and there are numerous strips with April and Gerald paired off on group dates with Duncan and Becky. They are about as boyfriend / girlfriend as 6th - 8th graders should be, in my opinion.

I suspect someone pointed out to Lynn Johnston that April was just 11 going on 12 at the time.

I share your suspicion on this. For a while, Lynn was having April engage in a host of prematurely adolescent behaviors. For example, the All About April collection, which documented April from birth through her tenth birthday, had a passage from Lynn about April hanging out at other kids' houses in unsupervised co-ed groups, trying cigarettes and beer. I think Lynn's reasoning at the time was "everything happens earlier now." She began to back away from this idea, and April was tamer between ages 13 and 16 than was from ten to eleven.

Nevertheless, in the interim period, the letters also talk about April being nervous because Gerald is spending so much time with Becky; and there are numerous strips with April and Gerald paired off on group dates with Duncan and Becky.I don't know--you could use the same logic to claim that Becky and Duncan had been a couple during that time. I think we're meant to believe that April and Becky did ( ... )

aprilp_katje,

If Lynn would just let April have it out with Gerald, or at least let us see her with Gerald to know she was not going to have it out; then there would be somewhere to go with it. However, if you are tired of the 4+ years idea, I will think on some other way to approach the hanging situation with Gerald.

I do wish Lynn would stop neglecting the Gerald/April relationship (or lack thereof). She's supposed to be telling a story in real time, yet she'll drop storylines for-seemingly-ever, and then pick them up again as if little to no time has passed. Now Lynn is preoccupied with the housening, and April's baffling belief that her wishes caused a tree to fall on the TTH. No time to focus on whether or not April will dump Gerald! Probably after the housening plotline wraps, we'll see Apes go off to the farm, and so maybe--MAYBE--April and Gerald will talk things out just before the freeze. And we'll be expected to think there's nothing wrong about waiting MONTHS to do so. ::SIGH::

As for approaching the "hanging" situation--please keep in mind that it's frustrating the heck out ME trying to write April! ;)

As for approaching the "hanging" situation--please keep in mind that it's frustrating the heck out ME trying to write April! ;)April, as presented in the strip, lets things go on for long periods of time, addressing them only in her thoughts. For all we know, if Becky McGuire hadn't overheard April speaking poorly about her to Gerald in September of 2005, Becky and April might still be best of friends, at least in Becky's mind ( ... )
