MISC.-- Fires, Home, Pirates...
I'm BAAAAACK!!!! Had a fab time in Europe. Will report on it all as soon as I recover from jet-lag that has me sleeping all day and up all night!

I will try and post about it as soon as I can, although I must say that I have been bad about posting about my big trips over the past few years... as in, I haven't posted anything at all about them! Bad me. But I will try and reform myself...
FIRES: Flew back to LAX on Friday and was just horrified at the smokey haze over the mountains and throughout the basin. And the smoke plumes. The air quality looked like it sucked more badly than I'd ever seen it. It's not so apparent from the ground, but from the airplane, there was a grey shroud over everything, making the city and land look washed out... ashen.
Thank goodness there aren't any Santa Ana winds, but it certainly seems bad enough, with fires ringing the hills all around L.A. to the north (and west and east). It's quite close to many houses in La Canada-Flintridge. Newer fires in Tujunga have destroyed structures. And now to firefighters have been killed, which is horrible.
PIRATES: Pirate Daze at the Queen Mary--held around "Talk Like a Pirate Day" on the weekend of Sept. 19 sounds fun. I haven't been, so can't tell for sure. There's a Masquerade Ball with a Pirate/Steampunk theme with Abney Park playing. That sounds fun.
