Question about Loans/Financial Aid

Jul 23, 2012 18:33

Quick about me: I'll be attending graduate school this fall, and my program takes approximately 3 years (8 semesters). I have zero debt from undergrad. For the entire year, my financial aid award is about $20,000 in unsubsidized loans.

I've been offered an assistantship, so my fall tuition has been waived and I'm only responsible for a few fees. My total for the semester comes to about $1,000. Here is where my question comes in. I'm not guaranteed of keeping my assistantship for the spring semester (although I certainly hope to), so I'm not totally sure of how much my second semester will be. As far as accepting loans, do I only get one chance each year to accept money, or will I be able to accept money for the spring semester at a later point? Is there an expiration date on loans?

I'm planning to call my school's financial aid office this week, but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone had thoughts, or if someone might bring up more points I should ask about. Apologies for my ignorance, and thank you very much for your help!
