Notifications

Does anyone know how application notifications work? I've heard from a little over half of the schools I've applied to and I'm still waiting on the rest (obviously). I'm a little confused and anxious because someone I know was accepted to a school a few weeks ago that I also applied to. I still haven't heard a single thing from said school and my status is stubbornly set at "applied." The person I know applied to the school in the same subject as myself but in a different field. Could that have something to do with the fact that that person has their answer but I still don't have mine?

Anyone else facing similar nerve-wracking application anticipation?
