This question is for any History majors out there. Since I am not applying until this fall, and I will not be starting until the fall after that, I was counting on having the time in between to make some money so I can actually afford to go to grad school ( Read more... )

I am not a history major, but this looks like a good list of potential jobs:

However, it's pretty hard to find a job that is both relevant to your field and financially rewarding, especially if you do not have much experience. So, you may also consider some hourly position unrelated to your field (retail, etc.), while doing some unpaid work in your free time.

Yes, I will probably have to find something in retail, though even those positions seem scarce these days!
Thank you so much for the great resource!

I have my convocation in 2 weeks (Hons. B.A. Major History, Minor Anthropology/BEd. Intermediate/Senior - History & Social Sciences).

I already have a job as a Program and Site Administrator for a Museum which uses both of my degrees.

I start my M.A. in History in September.

Is this a student summer grant job or a permanent full time position?

Part time until my M.A. is done, then it goes to full time.

That is amazing! How did you manage to find such a position so quickly?

Wow! Thank you so much. This is a really great list!
I was particularly glad to learn about idealist.org, and VISTA sounds very intriguing as well.
One of my closest friends is in Korea right now teaching English!

I majored in art history, so this is sort of similar to what I went through. I found a part-time retail position unrelated to my degree for my means of income and in the meantime, interned as a Marketing Assistant and later as a Curatorial Research Assistant at an art museum to gain experience.

Yep, I also am currently volunteering for a Museum as a development assistant, and by doing some marketing, while I look for paying work, and I will most likely end up retail - I certainly hope I find something, anyway.

I have a B.S./B.A. degree in non-profit management and history and I am now getting my Masters in museum education. As for work, I currently work three part-time jobs; two in the museum field (one as a tour guide and the other as a researcher) and then I tutor college students via my university's career center.

It is currently really hard to find a job. Out of my friends from college who graduated in 2009, I am the only one who has found work in my field (and that is not even full-time). So take comfort in the fact that you are not alone.

Wow! You have a lot on your plate. I am very glad to hear that a BA can be sufficient for a position as a researcher. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and for the kind words.
