Funding for an M.A. in the UK

I met with my former major adviser today, and as we were discussing the process of applying to grad school, she brought up Courtauld Institute of Art. To be honest, if their M.A. is viewed favorably in the US and I could expect to be able to go on to Ph.D. studies at an American university, this option would be attractive to me. Courtauld has an excellent rep in the U.S. however, they have limited funding available for abroad MAs.

Also, unless they've changed their policies, it's a one year program (10month for Art History, 12 month for curatorial).

One year programs have the benefit of being really good because you learn a lot. My friend said it was super tough but really great at the same time. Also, if you want LORs from the professors if you want to apply to a Phd program for the year after, you will have to get them from your professors a few months into the program where they really are not familiar with your skills.

Also, you are required to go abroad for winter break and while some expenses are covered in tuition you are responsible for paying the majority of other fees (food and board).

I know a person who went there and raved about it, however, London is a ridiculously expensive city, on par with New York, and you may have to pay out of pocket for that and the underground is much more expensive than NY too so take that into consideration. You'll likely incur a ridiculous amount of debt.

If you are considering abroad only look at three places in England, courtauld, oxford and cambridge. You may be wasting your time elsewhere.
