After all of the issues I've dealt with so far in the grad program I'm in, I've just about had it. Today my current advisor lied to my face. He was fired by the department and they informed me a couple weeks back. The chair asked me today if my advisor had discussed it with me yet. I told her "no" and she told me to ask him about it.
I asked him about it, only to have him tell me that he isn't going anywhere anytime soon and that he doesn't know anything about him leaving campus at all as he has no plans to. He followed this up by saying it was good I told him because he doesn't know anything about it.
The chair caught me after this and asked how it went, and I just told her what he had told me. She rolled her eyes and said "he has known for at least a month now. I've spoken with the provost and they told me that he is officially done. He'll get a contract to stay on for one more year, but he is removed from the tenure track and we have no plans of offering him another contract next year. He just lied to you."
I'm starting to get the feeling that he is going to try and screw me over somehow at this point. I really need to get out of this place if this is how the department tends to work. The thing is, I'm just not sure what to do at this point. I've sent out a couple emails, but I haven't heard anything back. I really don't want a situation like this to put an end to my career, but I'm not seeing much of an option yet to get in anywhere else... Are there any suggestions on how to improve my chances for getting into another program or how to deal with the mess that my current department is without losing my sanity?
