Seconding the practice test recommendation. Some people take ages (weeks, months) to study for it, and some people could probably cram it in a few days. I wrote the Psych GRE and crammed fairly hard for 2 days and got a great score, but I'd already done pretty well on a practice test and was familiar with most of the material from coursework. Clearly this approach would not work for everyone.
Taking the practice test is a good idea. I basically crammed the week before I took the test and got an excellent score, but I had taken survey courses in all periods of British and American literature, minored in comp lit, and taken an intro to critical theory course, so I had a basic familiarity with pretty much everything that showed up on the test. Even if I didn't know what the answer was I was able to eliminate answers I knew to be incorrect. I don't know what your background is, so you might have more gaps to fill than I did. Taking the practice test should help you determine if it's worth $50 to re-schedule or if you have a chance at a decent score.
I think for most people months of studying is better than short-term cramming, especially for the Lit test. There is just so much to cover and remember!
I also signed up for the one this Saturday, although more because I thought I had to rather than any sort of strategic planning. If I had the $50, I definitely would have rescheduled for later in the year so I could have spent the summer studying. As it is, I'm getting about two weeks of hard studying in.
If you can afford it, spend the $50 and reschedule. This intense studying shit sucks, and I certainly am second guessing my choice to play it this way.
I'm in the same boat, but I feel like taking it in September (or is the next one October) might just be too late when applying early for graduate school in the fall. Anyway, I wasn't terribly pleased with my score on the practice test, but I'm also not going into literature. I'm going into rhetoric/composition. I've heard the logic section (that's not the actual name; I can't remember the actual name) on the general GRE means more to those types of departments. What do people think of this?
