I have a funny brief question in light of the recent inquiry about little known undergrad institutions and potential wrenches they might throw in the application process.
I had one advisor tell me that big schools will take on students from little known undergraduate programs (given a good app) because of "geographic diversity" or somesuch. She was serious, but this community has convinced me that advisors/professors can provide some rather off-kilter advice. It seems like wishful thinking that some adcom would look at my application and say "Gee, this Baldwin Snootypuss Davenport III seems a little too... expected. This girl is from Oregon, that sounds exotic and under-privileged! Let's give diversity a chance!" *commence self-congratulatory puffs on the meerschaums*
That IS just wishful thinking right? She just made it sound like big schools only get applicants from super ritzy places and I know that can't entirely be the case.
