Financial Aid...How much debt is worth it?

Mar 23, 2009 14:45

Right so I have already posted a bit about my delima Here.

Now, I've gotten my financial aid form Yale and it's $14K each year. Tuition and fees are $22,500. And then I have to account for cost of living. This aid is not including any potential grants from the governemnt (like work study, or the Pell grant) and a couple of my undergrad profs have friends that work in the department I'm applying for and who have friends who might be able to get me a good 'deal' on a place to stay.
So...considering I - at this point - would still have to magically find $25K a year, should I just turn Yale down? Is it worth it to visit? Should I hold out to see if I can get more aid, or should I go ahead and throw all my energy into setting myself up at Emory?
I apologize if I sould like a complete moron - but everyone that I know that's gone to grad school either got a full ride with stipend, or no money whatsoever. So, there are no inbetweeners. Thanks for all advice in advance!! :)
EDIT: Is name recognition worth it?

PS...my friend didn't get into any of her Ph.D programs, BUT she did get into an MA program at NYU (although unfunded, but it's an MA prgram). She's a little disapointed, but since she has no undergrad debt, I told her she'll be coming out with the same amount of debt someone with some undergrad debt and some grad would have. I guess everything works out in the end!
