Deciding to go to grad school post-graduation and talking to professors!

Mar 22, 2009 18:38

Hi all.  So I just graduated from college, and AFTER everything I finally decided that I want to get a Master's in social psych.  However, when I was actually in college, I spent way too much time being completely indecisive about what I wanted to do, my GPA isn't that stellar (3.15, but I did major in Molecular Cell Bio...ugh) and I never talked to any professors.  But I recently started volunteering in a few labs as a research assistant where I don't have much responsibility (just running participants through experiments and data entry), and I plan on trying to develop relationships with the professors of the labs. I'd love to hear about the experiences of other people who are/were in my position, because, as you can imagine, I'm kind of tearing my hair out over here since I don't really know how to get the ball rolling on this thing.

I also have a more specific question: do you guys have any tips on how to talk to professors? And how often should I stop into office hours to speak with them without coming off as a goody two shoes?  How often did YOU stop in to talk to your professors?  I'm pretty intimidated by them and am afraid of annoying them with silly questions about their past research.

And finally, is there anyone who has any experience with applying to the psychology MA program at NYU?  This is my top choice, and I would absolutely love to go here. I have questions for you as well...haha.

Thanks for reading! :)
