So I've decided to go for it and apply to MFA programs in creative writing. I've split, fifty fifty, on number of people in my life who think I'm a loon for doing this, and people who think it's a fantastic idea. It's a littler frustrating, dealing with the naysayers, I must admit ( Read more... )

I think it's a waste of money. You will be better served spending time researching programs and finding who you are interested in studying with. Spend the money getting the work of faculty to read so you'll know whether they are writers you want to be influenced by.

I have already made some head way there. I made a reading list of all work by alumni and current professors. God bless the public library...

Waste of money. Only in-person writing workshops will really help you build your portfolio.

"Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of pessimism? How did you handle it?"

Well, if you know you want to go for the MFA, and you have a sound, logical reason for doing so, what's the problem? Lay out your reasoning to the "naysayers". If they can logically refute your ideas, you should question your plan. If they cannot, stick with what you've come up with. Just be open to suggestions, because your logic may or may not be correct. It's *GOOD* to be challenged on your ideas; that's how you progress intellectually.

I do indeed. My undergraduate major was Screenwriting. I don't consider those four years a waste, but in narrowing my scope in that way during my undergraduate career, I found that once i graduated and tried to find work, my education was a bit lopsided and my portfolio was lacking in definite areas. I want to go back to school to give myself the time to grow in different mediums of writing I've previously not had the opportunity to explore.

Oddly enough it's always professors and older friends who seem to think furthering my education is a good idea. The ones who think it's an idiotic idea are all younger.

Sorry you probably didn't need all that word vomit I just tossed at you, I'm just trying to explain...lol

Then go for it. Who cares if not everyone agrees with your plan...? If people don't understand, they don't understand. There's not much you can do.

People often don't understand how you want to go to grad school, that's my experience too. But if you like the idea of it, go ahead, because I think there is a reason. Only believe in what you feel, others can't live their life but only you can understand life. But I wouldn't do online.
