Okay,
So I'm working on my statement of purpose for one particular program. The instructions call for "A personal narrative of approximately 1,000 words (four double-spaced typed pages)."
Lengthwise, this won't be a problem. I'm only three lines onto my fourth page, and I basically have to discuss my career goals and write my conclusion. However, even at three lines onto my fourth page, I'm already at 1016 words.
Do you think this will be a major problem? I'm thinking not, since I'm sending them a paper copy, rather than uploading it electronically. It's not like they can copy and paste it into Microsoft Word and hit the magical "Word Count" option. If they want to count the words, they'd have to do it manually, which I have a hard time believing they'd be anal enough to do.
Do you think, as long as I stay within the four page guideline, I'll be okay?
ETA: Because I'm working on it, and these things pop up: This program is quite selective--15 students per year--and, by some chance of fate, one of the guys who started there this fall went to my undergraduate institution, graduating in 2006. I saw he was attending and Facebooked him, and we've been discussing the program back and forth. When discussing why I think this particular program would help me fulfill my career goals, would it be okay to note that I have been in contact with a current student and his positive experience thus far has further convinced me that it would be a great program for me?
Thanks in advance (and sorry for the spazzout). :)
