I'm...not sure. The data plan is a required $20 addon (although it comes with 200 texts, add a bit more for more/unlimited, so it replaces any messaging thing you might have already) because voicemail and other things use it for some inexplicable reason..

As a media player, unless you could justify the cost, I'm not sure it's completely worth it. There are definitely cheaper options out there and all. Before my iPhone, I used my PDA and it rocked at playing videos because it played all my .avis no problem without reencoding..something I can't do on the iPhone (big pain).

So I suppose it's really whether or not you feel like splurging $5-600 dollars (even more for accessories...). My first huge WTF with my iPhone is that my headphones can't fit in the port on the iPhone because it's recessed, and my headphones are the L-shaped bent kind that are too bulky. So it was either chop up my expensive earbuds to fit (hell no) or to buy an adapter to make it fit. Et cetera. :P

Regardless, if you were interested, I'd assume it would take a bit of time to save up for the iPhone, in which case by then iPods may be updated. The entire iPod line is due for an update (well, 100 days over the average..), and people are suggesting that the higher-end iPod is going to be something like a phoneless phone, and the nano a device that can play video, etc. Just rumors, but it HAS been a while since the last update, I assume because of the iPhone.

What sucks most of all is that you can't get education discounts on the iPhone, that would have been awesome :(
