So, I watch a LiveJournal group that has rather controversial posts - it's about debating abortions ( Read more... )

Let me point out for the gazillionth time that this is not a post about whether or not they should have had that right. I am just trying to wrap my brain around why they would have done this.

1. They themselves state God all over the place. Every single sentence about them meeting up, getting married, and having kids mentions God in it somewhere. Should I explicitly quote them on that statement they made about not wanting to abort any fetuses? Or wait, pretty much any statement they make. It's a miracle they were born, it's a miracle some are still alive, ...yeah, but honestly..God?

2. what happened here was that they took follistim and somewhere along the line, someone fucked up. Doctors only saw two viable eggs. And then a month later they found out it must have been at least ten. however, multiple births is a known and huge risk of doing this to begin with.

2a. Might I insert a note here that if they tried for only a year on two different and not cheap fertility drugs and treatments and ended up with sextuplets, maybe you'd do what you could to protect them and carry as many as long as you possibly could? Instead of risking everything and carrying ALL of them.

3. I'm sure they must have been elated...initially. again, they only have one car seat and stroller.

4. Okay, but the idea is that with each additional child, the risks of complication go up and up and up. As a result, aborting even one could make a huge impact on the rest. Not all of the six would have been identical. The LA couple aborted the males knowing that they had an increased risk for autism. It could have been arbitrary, or you could have selected the few that would have the greatest chance of surviving. I understand it's not an easy choice.

My main point is that at this time when three of the babies have already died and the other three are in critical condition, what if they had aborted three instead? The rest probably would still have yet to be born, let alone in critical condition.

They made that choice for themselves, but I can't help but think that there could have been a better outcome if they had gone a different way.
