Freedom!

Yesterday I bought myself a new state-of-the-art bicycle, as a spur-of-the-moment, late Birthday present. The technology has moved on unbelievably in the 20 odd years since I last owned a bike. I've been test-riding my new wheels in the big wide streets of Auckland and am absolutely delighted with it! The sense of freedom is exhilarating.

I have never learned to drive a car, somehow I seem to have an aversion to the thought of driving. Yet I've been getting increasingly frustrated with the limitations this creates, especially since moving to the more car-oriented country of New Zealand. As a child and young adult I always owned a bicycle, and I had forgotten just how much I enjoy the sensation of the wind rushing past while pedaling fast. I should have done this months ago, still it was worth the wait!

As an aside, the purchase of my bike involved one of those strange coincidences which seem to accompany all of the important events of my life. While in the cycle shop, I was having second thoughts about the particular model I had my eye on, and was also wondering if I could justify spending so much money to buy it. At that point, my eye fell on the manufacturers's brand-name on the crossbar: "Apollo". I then "knew" that this was meant for me.
