Other People's Memories: 2 Notice to quit
One of the more tiresome, frustrating, and dare I say "triggering" (in that it just makes me revert to the same mental state I'm in around my family) things that my friends kindly insist on doing is rewriting history in my direction. I find myself thinking "I have a WRITTEN RECORD that 24 hours ago you said the opposite of this, were you lying then, or are you lying now?". I'm not a fan of being manipulated, lied to, or generally messed around for whatever weird purposes other people have in mind, and the fact is if I'm still friends with you after several examples of that it bespeaks a fairly significant affection. So I'm not going anywhere, but I think from now on that if I get a dose of total contradiction, point it out, and get some airy nonsense about "not having said that" (when you bloody well did and I can tell you the exact time, date, and phrasing involved) or a hand-waving about not having meant it at all, the conversation ends there. I'll go and have my guilt about being a shitty friend in private, but there's no reason why I should stand still and be treated like someone's personal piss-pot of opinion, mindlessly nodding yes to every self-contradictory sentence spewed.
