A particularly enjoyable show from Ginger & co this week, featuring a number of acts that I have a special soft spot for. Shame it was tainted by this week's "Marmite moment" being those monstrous cunts Towers of London! I hadn't heard them in ages, and had half forgotten they existed, and then I heard Donnie Tourette's annoying mockney whine and immediately wanted to go and murder some kittens.
Ginger said that he understands that the Towers are not to everyone's taste, but he thought that at that time the record industry needed a band like them to shake things up. I agree, but I think that the band to do that was actually the GALLOWS, a band who combine authentic punk rock frenzy with socially conscious lyrics and top-notch songwriting. Note that while the Towers have vanished into obscurity, Gallows are still being lauded by the alternative music press despite losing their charismatic frontman, Frank Carter.
Mr. Carter, meanwhile, has been criticised by fans of his former band for moving into new musical territory with his new project, Pure Love. While some fans were disappointed that Pure Love does not have the same hardcore sound as Gallows, personally, I think that Frank Carter would have been selling out if he'd continued to make angry music which conflicts with his true feelings. The joyous debut single from Pure Love, Bury My Bones, has a first line that's like a statement of intent: "I'm so sick of singing about hate". And that's why I respect Frank Carter. He's had the balls to confound his fans' expectations and stick to his guns. True fucking punk rock.
Anyway, here's the fourth episode of Radio Ginger:
