When Church's rounds took him through the infirmary, Robin was awake. He was sitting in his bed propped up by pillows, glaring into his own lap and in a royal sulk. When he heard footsteps approaching, he looked up, listening carefully in an attempt to identify the walker. Church or Tex, he thought. That was easy enough. He listened and thought for another moment. ...Almost ninety percent sure it's Church.
Sure enough, it was the man in blue armor that appeared in the door. Oh good, he's come to mock me, thought Robin. Just what I need.
"Hey, kid," Church said in greeting as he made his way in. "How's that oxygen tank treating ya?" Hmm, no damage in this room! Okay, so he could probably be more thorough, but there didn't seem much need to be, not just yet. This part of the colony was pretty well-protected and up until lately, hadn't seen much use.
Robin narrowed his eyes slightly. "...It's helping," he replied neutrally. He glanced over to where it sat on the cart. "I don't need it all the time, now."
"Yeah, I can see that. Hey, you know, least you didn't walk on into the colony before trying to take off that suit. Coulda done a lot worse. Or it coulda been your dumbass spacewalk buddy who choked on the stuff. Betcha he wouldn'ta made it." Which maybe wouldn't have been so bad, he thought, except that someone dying meant more work for the rest of them.
Church hadn't spent much time on the agricultural levels. He didn't know why. When he was younger he'd occasionally fantasized about living out in the country someday, maybe having a couple animals and a vegetable garden. He liked the city well enough, and Austin in particular was a nice place to have grown up, but the ever-present myth of the West, of living off the land, of going horseback riding in the grasslands between the flat-topped mountains out at the base of the Rockies had always held a special interest to him, that someday he'd achieve that dream
( ... )
The Count turns to face Church and gives a welcoming nod. "I suppose so, but I prefer to spend more time here among the plants. Besides, the sooner we plant the sooner we shall have fresh food. Will that not be pleasant, monsieur?"
"...Yeah. Looking forward to it," he replied dryly. One of these days they were going to notice that he and Tex never ate with the rest of them. Or at all. That was an explanation he never liked having to give.
