Ever since her father returned home, things had been looking up for Meg Murry. She was doing better in school, she hadn't been getting into as much trouble, her attitude had calmed down and things were looking up! Life, as Charles Wallace had said, was good.

Meg stares.

After a moment, "Hi. Where am I?"

"No idea," the other girl replies cheerfully. "Southern hemisphere somewhere is about all I can figure out. Earth, probably."

"Oh."

Yes, that is a tiny hint of disappointment in her voice!

"So... wait. There's no place on Earth that looks like this."

Not that she knows of, at least.

"Sure there is, once you add an extra dimension to your calculations."

She's surprisingly calm, given that she's talking with this odd girl who just appeared out of nowhere.

"I figured an extra dimension was involved," she says, pushing her glasses up her nose. "That's how I got here, anyway, I think. By tessering. But... is this... what year is it?"

"Thirty for you, maybe," she says, and her voice sounds a little... sad.

"... I'm Meg. Meg Murry."

"It's nice to meet you, Meg," says the girl, conveniently forgetting to offer her own name.

A pause, and then:

"Okay."

Another pause!

"Do you have a name?"

A grin. "No, but I'm trying to decide on one. What do you think of 'Victoria'? Too pretentious?"

"Trying to think of one?"

Meg blinks.

"You mean you don't already have one?"

"Well, I did," she replies, "but it was a purely functional one, and it doesn't really apply any more."

Meg tilts her head.

"I don't understand," she admits, mouth curling into somewhat of a frown.
