Hamel doesn't salute, but he does flick the brim of his hat in something that might, possibly, if you look at it sideways and squint... be seen as a sign of recognition and respect.
A ten count after Iroh comes out of the vertigo-inducing portal of void, and it collapses on itself, folding up with a sound somewhere in between a squish and a metal-bending screech.

The Magog have drawn first blood. There will be a battle soon; there's no doubt about that.
One way or another, Saturn will be joining the battle.

"There will be time to mourn, and to pay him the proper respects, but in the meantime, there is much that must be done. I have checked and there are no attackers outside, but that does not mean they will not come."
The man seemed far harsher-looking than he'd been before, and far, far older. There was a reason for this.
"Those of you that are new will be explained your situation by those who have resided here for longer, and will be explained what duties we need you to do--and that you must do yourselves for our mutual survival."
Because that was who he'd come to respect, if that could be the term for it. Zuko had his respect, Spoon... well, it was something close to caring, though nothing nearly that mushy, and Johnny had his trust.
Everyone knew Iroh the Warrior, Iroh the Master, and especially Iroh the Friendly Uncle.
Today they would meet Iroh, the General, the Dragon of the West.
"Everyone, attention!" Any soldiers in the room might not be able to resiste the urge to stand at attention and salute.
