Yuletide recs: Breaking Bad Edition
I think, probably, that there aren't very many people who are both interested in and unspoiled for Breaking Bad, but just in case - and because they're so numerous! - I'm 'breaking recs' for these out from the post I'll make of other main collection recs.
SPOILERS for the series live in most (all?) of these fics and probably my comments about them as well:
I received two wonderful gifts in this fandom! One of the things I wished for in my letter was a story in which Jesse finds some peace in the aftermath of "Felina". Both gift stories offer Jesse comfort and grace and a chance to connect with another character whose life was shredded by proximity to Walter White and things he put in motion.
Casts & Slings finds Jesse with Marie, in the home she shared with Hank. I really love its subtle depiction of Marie's grief and anger and eventual mercy, and Jesse's skittishness and awkward attempts to pay back her kindnesses.
Take Me Home finds Jesse briefly reunited with Brock. I really love the way this piece uses its child-narrator; we know this can't last, but for now, it's all okay.
Breaking Bad had a haul of great fic this Yuletide! Here are some stand-out stories written for other fans:
Excuse Me for a While - snapshots from Skyler's life after Walter
Drive - a look at Jesse and Mike's relationship and how it echoes long after Mike's death
Sangre Por Sangre - flashback to a more vulnerable, but no less focused, Gus Fring
& someone's got to fall before someone goes free - snapshots of good moments Jesse has before and after the series
Several of the BrBa stories dealt with Marie and Skyler's relationship in a satisfyingly nuanced way:
Nothing Beside Remains - Marie and Skyler and their father and their husbands
Unbreaking - Marie deals with the wreckage of her home and what remains of her family
Blood Ties - Marie and Skyler as children, teenagers, wives, and widows
