The Tonys made my life complete, but for more reasons than the usual. Like I was stomping and squealing and crying!!!!
Okay, you people might not know this, but I have fangirled Trey Parker and Matt Stone for a decade now. Not just for South Park, but I own Orgasmo and Cannibal the musical on VHS (and would not part with them ever). I don't care what the world says about Baseketball. It married my love for Zucker Bros comedy and Trey and Matt and I watched it an indecent amount of times and used to rewind every moment when Trey or Matt were especially adorable (it's not just fangirling. It's loooove). In college, a friend had a friend at some entertainment news show and I wrote a heartfelt plea for Trey to be my date for my college's Senior Send-off (I might love him most of all because he's so... sweet and boyish and adores musicals). We never were able to get the letter to Trey, but just the fact that I tried and obsessed for a month should show you that I truly care.
Anyway, I've spent the last few days obsessed with Book Of Mormon. Every interview, every news piece, every song. I've listened to them all over and over and can't find a song in it I don't love. Hell, there's this piece of me that's afraid I'm going to HELL for loving "Hasa Diga Eebowai" as much as I do (listen and you'll know why). But I've rationalized it that the characters have a good reason to say it and the phrase is amended by the end, so that makes some enjoyment of the song okay. I laugh because it's wrong and hope it's made right, see?
Or maybe I just laugh because I am Trey and Matt's bitch and always will be. They can do no wrong. Even when they mock my faith (which they do to mine and every other), I take it on the chin. Heck, I'm a good practicing Catholic girl, but that's no reason not to have an irreverent laugh now and then. God must have a sense of humor because tickling is a feature of skin. I don't know.
But I've read the synopsis and listened to the songs in sequence (closest I can get to seeing it till it goes on tour) and dug up every video I can on this show. And It's very sweet. Obviously, Matt's an atheist and Trey's agnostic, but they do have respect for deeply religious people who try to do good and an obvious soft spot for those ridiculously polite Mormons. Do I agree with their beliefs? Of course not. But do I like that they are crazily polite? Just a little.
Trey and Matt said they were sure the LDS wouldn't be protesting their show and would be cool about it and they pretty much were, all "The Book of Mormon may entertain you for a night, but the true Book Of Mormon will change your life." Something like that. So yeah. Mormons are polite. I have to give them that.
It's using the Mormons, but really about all religion. Matt actually said this was kind of his atheist love letter to religion and I dig that. I like that he can, without believing, respect what belief can do for the believers and for the people they try to help.
There's a reason this show is the hottest ticket on Broadway. It's shocking, sure, but it also means well and has a lot of heart.
Long ramble aside, MY BOYS WON NINE EFFING TONYS!!! And they were nominated for fourteen. I get that Norbert Leo Butts (how did he ever make it out of grade school alive?) won Best Actor over Josh and Andrew. I only watched the Tony bit, but his performance in Catch Me If You Can seemed like the casting of a pretty awesome mold and I hardly recognized him in there. So good for Norbert and his unfortunate name. But I thought the costumes should have won from what I saw in behind the scenes vids.
It also lost for choreography to Anything Goes. But that does have huge ensemble tapping, which is a crowd pleaser, so I get it. Besides, Casey (the choreographer) got to take Best Director with Trey, so he still won.
At any rate, I ADORED the moment when Chris Rock was announcing best Musical and pretty much saying BOM was taking it and acting all fake-surprised when he read the name,
I really wish "Turn it Off" or "Tomorrow is a Latter Day" or "Two by Two" or "Hello" (I freaking love so many songs!!!) had been picked as the song to represent it as more of the cast would have been shown. But "I Believe" is funny and passionate and strangely touching. Just see for yourself...

I'm so proud of my BOYS!
Also happy for Frances McDormand, John Larroquette, and Sutton Foster.
Also, it was fun to see Dan Radcliffe sing and dance with an American accent.
Just as a bonus, in case you want to see one of the BEST REASONS I love Matt`and Trey, watch this...

You know why I love this? Because all these anchors had to read Trey and Matt's awesome statement "So, Scientology, you may have won this battle. But the million year` war for Earth has just begun." I remember, at the time, there were more news stories with more full statements from them and I wish I could find them all.
But you get it.
Trey and Matt are awesome.
I'll stop now.
Off to listen to every song in that musical again. And you should, too. You can find them all on youtube.
