My week of awesomeness began on Wednesday when I decided to see Band Of Annuals in concert for the first time in almost four months. It still sounds weird to say that, because at one time they and their friends were my primary circle of friends when I lost mine. I didn't miss a show they played in Utah for the first two years they were a band, and sold merch at their shows for most of those. Now most of those friends are practically strangers to me. We'll say hello if we see each other, but that's about it. Couples have split, marriages have ended and people have moved. It all feels like so very long ago, despite them being a regular group of friends as recently as last summer.
After the show, we (the band, friends and the touring band) made plans to go to a new restaurant downtown, but found it closed. It was two hours before closing time, but they had decided to close early due to it being so slow. Frustrated, the twenty or so of us in three cars headed to The Pie (my suggestion) as a contingency plan.
There was a bit of a surreal feeling about the gathering that had a little to do with being with these friends I barely knew anymore and partially due to our seating arrangement. The four Provo people sat together with the three Ogden people next to them followed by the San Franciscan touring band. Each city seemed to have their own little conversation, with me choosing to align with the Provo people at the end of the table, primarily to sit next to a girl I like but hadn't run into in three years. It was also business as usual, as my comment about the Salt Lake elevation from the far end of the table went either unheard or ignored by the two people talking about it. My immediate comment after the moment was, "I'm the smartest person at the table and nobody listens to me."
On the ride home, I caught up with two friends and made small talk about music. This conversation was also weird, and reminded me of just how hard it'd be to get back to the friendship we had four years ago.
Friday night was also spent with old friends, only things weren't nearly as awkward, despite me never being good friends with any of them in high school. It was nice to have an excuse to don my Halloween costume again, and have fun dancing without worrying about looking like a fool.
There's also Saturday and Sunday to catch up on, but I really need to accomplish a few things, including testing out my new mp3 player speakers and upload the photos from the concert last night.
