a bushel and a peck!

josh found online that to master the harmonica it only takes ten hours of practice, and the difference between someone who's been playing for ten years and ten hours, is that the other person just most likely knows more songs. did you know when tom waits first started he wore that harmonica head peice just to give a bob dylan look? well he's trying to get 'blowin in the wind' down on his harmonica. i said we should perform together one day at some local place, like open mic, and i can sing. he got all excited by the idea and i thought it was adorable.

two little memories i don't want to forget:

1. at four years old i was watching pbs kids sometime in may. all their commercials were advertising the day of mother's day. "make sure to give your mommy big kisses, tell her how great she is, and get her something sweet!" i instantly went uh-oh because i did not know of any of this. so i dressed like an older person so i could buy something for her in the small market two blocks from this small apartment we lived in new york city. i wore a long skirt that wasn't mine, an eighties sweater. high heels and a scarf around my head. so i looked like a little midget woman walking down in one of, i didn't know, worst neighborhoods for small children to even play in their front yard. i gathered up money in the living room and all i found was twenty-three cents. "how much is this mister?" "1.99" "may i get the whole box of powdered doughnuts because it's mother's day and twenty-three cents is all i have, please?" i don't know how thinking about it but the man gave me the box of doughnuts and let me keep the twenty-three cents. in new york city, that's not common, mostly no-bull-shit kind of sellers. so i walked back home and my mom is bawling her eyes out thinking that i was kidnapped or ran away since i left the door open, she was taking a shower when i left. i said "but i was getting you doughnuts! look." she noticed how funny i was dressed and the small change in my small hand, and that was the best mother's day i ever had.

2. at five years old i had a field trip with my kindergarten class to the park, the trip was going to be two hours in total. i ate a big brunch before it so my mom only packed me one cherry blowpop and one sour green apple blowpop. i had two best friends, tanisha and amee. we went to the brooklyn park by the huge cemetary. i pulled my blowpops out to choose which ones she packed me and was all smiles because apple was my favorite. tanisha asked me for one, my little brain "well barney says sharing is good...and i have another green apple one.." so i gave her the cherry blowpop. amee saw and asked if she could have one too please. my little brain again "i don't want amee to think i like tanee better...oh no..i guess..i'll..share. " so i gave it to her and she said thanks and hugged me, i nodded and went behind the slide for a few minutes and cried because i really wanted the green lollipop, but then i relaxed and played with my friends for the rest hour and fifty minutes we had.
