You should be safe, though, right?

She did still have Allen to keep her company, and Daisya as well. The latter was especially unexpected, given that he was...well, dead. Good things could happen her, however accidental they might be. Maybe it was possible that the carnival was one such thing.
She'd worn her mask, but pushed it up on her head now for an unobstructed view of the ferris wheel. It looked fun, and she of all people had no fear of heights. If she got in trouble, she'd have no problems getting down. Lenalee smiled to herself and hurried over to claim one of the swinging seats.

"Tell me about your world, Gokudera." Maybe she could distract him until they were moving again. She could hear the sounds of repair from below, clanks and metallic sounds that weren't exactly comforting either. "What do you do there? And some of your friends are here too, right? What are they like?" Lenalee leaned back in the car again, but was careful to stay as still as possible. "Do you have parents? Siblings?" He might be annoyed by how many questions she was asking, but she found that she was genuinely curious as well.

It was locked, and even as the detective made that determination, the machine lurched, carrying them up a level.
The car rocked with the motion of L's instinctive pulling of his heels onto the seat beneath him. He leaned forward to watch the people and spirits dwindle on the ground. His voice calm and low, he addressed Light as if in confidence, "This is the first time I've ridden one of these."

L ceased speaking, staring into the blackened horizon, the subtle, barely-there glimpse of cerise lost on the detective. Who had Light seen in the floating outside the window last week? More importantly, had the phantoms already passed, or were they merely illusions? If they were, indeed, actual spirits of the dead, then Naomi and Watari were gone.
Tilting his head, L eyed his suspect. "Have you ridden before?"

If he'd had the misfortune to be raised outside the Wammy House, to what length would he have gone to relieve his boredom?
With a sincerity unnatural for someone so steeped in the culture of deception, L asked curiously. "Why has it been so long? Don't you like carnivals?"

No.
Light feigned his disinterest. With every interaction between them, it became clearer that only he, L, drew any true emotional response from the youth. In his genuine curiosity in Light as a person rather than merely a suspect, L was redefining their relationship. Light's withdrawal was a normal enough response.
The last thing L wished to do was court death, yet neither would he deny his interest. Tilting his head, L took the sight of the other in, viewing him solely as another person. "Is there anything in life that you like, Light-kun?"
