I like GoodReads because of the recommendations. Basically, you put in ratings for books you've read, and the site spits back out recommendations for things other people who liked the books you liked rated highly. If it recommends something you know you don't want to read, you can mark it that way, and the site will modify its recommendations based on that.
There is a social aspect to the site available in that you can have friends and see what they've put on their to be read list and what they've rated (and they, of course, can see what you've similarly listed. I should note that your ratings are public. My eleven year old is on there and refused my friend request, but I can still see what she has rated). People do sometimes write reviews of books, and those can be helpful in deciding whether or not you're interested in a particular book. You don't have to have friends or to review.
I don't trust the GoodReads algorithms enough to buy based on its recommendations, but I do often get things from the library because of it, and it suggests books I've never heard of.
