So, here's some information on about 10% of my posted interests for those of you who have trouble sleeping and need something to read.
- blues:
I love the blues, they truly are the american music. It's a genre so wide and general and encompasses so many different viewpoints and motives. I prefer older blues, from the 60s and 70s and am constantly amazed by how much the Stones and Zeppelin stole from the early blues masters. - directing:
I've come to the point in my viewing of movies that I can no longer enjoy the dialogue of the movie because the screenwriting is so bad that I spend my time analyzing how the director sets up the scenes and manages his or her actors. I think if I could work in the movies as anything I'd want to be a director so I could execute my own vision of things. In my interests I have several directors listed who I will watch pretty much anything from. - geeks:
I am a geek, nuff said. - led zeppelin:
Led Zeppelin blues material is music for my soul. Zep brings me back to my high school days, just discovering new emotions like lust, angst, envy, heartbreak, &c. Their songs with the floating guitars and crashing drums shed new light on those feelings for me and the vocals still blow me away. - modernism:
I like clean lines, uncluttered spaces, form following purpose. Having gone to school on the campus Mies built I got spoiled. - old books:
There's nothing like the solid, reliable feel of an old book. I remember coveting my grandfather's chemistry text even though I hated the subject. It was beautifully bound in green cloth with perfect, neat, small type. The smell of an old book comforts me. My prized possession is my first edition Atlas Shrugged. - reason:
I think of myself as a reasonable person, I try to view decision points in terms of what reason would dictate as opposed to emotion, which is difficult for me as a typically emotional and hot-headed irishman. I believe that clinging to reason and things like logic can help temper our passions and with good discourse and observation can get us where we need to go. That being said I have been known to abandon reason on occasion ;) - socrates:
Ahhhhh Socrates. I prefer Aristotle, but I learned a lot from Socrates and the Five Dialogues growing up. It's funny how his teachings are so often repackaged to make some new bald-headed big smiler rich by distilling them into Habits. - theater:
I have enjoyed vaulting across the stage on occasion, with great pride once as Benedick and notoriously as literally a horse's ass. There is an energy and chaos that is intoxicating while performing. It doesn't hurt that being on stage as a child was one of the few times I ever got to do anything with my father. - woodworking:
I admire anyone who can take some scraps of wood and turn out a beautiful piece of furniture. This is something I'd really like to learn more about and become good at. I've had some success with restoring some furniture, but that is barely the tip of the iceberg.
