Clear skies, and frantic-ish photography
Experimented with the filters again, and got a few decent shots of both
Jupiter though Violet filter, bands visible.
and
Venus through Violet filter, very low exposure.
The advice I got from Astronomy and Astronomy 101 came in very handy. I cranked down the exposure on Venus, and the starbust effect did disappear.
