I know, I know, media reporting being racist is nothing new. But why are there reports all over that "robbery offences committed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander juveniles fell 80 per cent between 2008 and 2009", with no mention of crimes being committed by people of any other racial identity? I saw an article on the same subject on Ch10 news. The promo catch phrase was "Redfern's Renaissance, six years after the riots". Additional info was that Indigenous employment in the area was increasing and that public housing in the area was going to be upgraded. This information coupled with an interview with an "Indigenous mentor" who spoke of a new sense of civic pride in the community presented the image of a success story for Redfern. Given that the problems of Redfern are often largely presented in the media as being "Aboriginal problems", it was unsurprising that non-Aboriginal crime figures were not mentioned. These additional figures would be red herrings to the overall "story" of the article.

Today when I was checking to make sure a guy was in the right queue, he told me "I can read. I'm Australian, not Aboriginal."

Takes a lot to surprise me, but I just had to walk away from that one. No words.
