olin: day one

since i've barely posted on here in the last week and i haven't talked to many of you through email, i'm sure you're all dying to know what i've been doing since last saturday. and even if you're not, i want to write all this down before i forget.

after packing the car on friday night, we left around 5 on saturday morning. the drive took about 5 hours. i slept for all except the last hour or so. then we started seeing signs for olin, and i got extremely excited. karen told me to stop bouncing and squeeling "olin!". they had a few people halfway up the driveway to greet us, and then we parked, were greeted again by more people, and went to the welcome booth. before we got there, i heard someone else being greeted behind us and turned around to see who it was. and lo and behold, there was kent munson with his parents. we all said hi, the parents introduced themselves to each other, and then we all went to the booth to pick up our folders and name tags. we went to a couple different places to get the room keys, pictures taken for the id's, etc. it was really comforting that the first freshman i saw was someone i already knew.

then i finally got to see my room. ashley, my roommate, was already there, with a bunch of boxes in the middle of the room and more than a bunch of bags from target on her bed. the r2s helped us move everything from the car up the room, and then my mom and i started to unpack a little while my sister and dad wandered around campus. lunch, then back to the room for more unpacking.

back to the dining hall for a bunch of welcoming speeches, including many mentions of the fact that our class completes olin college. my family then stayed in my room, while i hung out with freshmen and r2s in the lounge. then back to my room with ashley, chris, alison, and kelly. we learned that it is possible to have five people sitting side by side on a bed, even though the person on the end will feel like he or she is about to fall off. kelly got her mandolin and played for us a little. somewhere during this time i acquired the nickname "minor" from chris. we wandered around to visit other people's rooms, and then back to the dining hall again. dinner with rayona, kelcy, and others, and then went outside to say goodbye to my parents and karen. lots of hugging and "i'll miss you" and then finally they left for my grandma's house, where they stayed for the night before driving back the next day.

finished dinner, then back to the dorms. somehow i ended up getting a swing dancing lesson from paul, who was attempting to teach two guys and about six girls all at once. there were many comments about how we were breaking the ratio. (our class has 29 girls and 48 guys, but the ratio in the room was much different.) it was fun. then we had a giant meeting in the lounge, called "this is your first night of college". appropriate name, right? apparently you can fit the entire freshman class, plus 8 r2s, into the west hall second floor lounge. they don't fit very well and it gets very stuffy in there after a few hours, but they do all fit. the meeting was really long, but very informative. we talked about everything, including stuff about the rooms, food, r2s, safety, classes, computers, etc. oh, and "olincest" (i think the meaning is pretty obvious) and other relevant topics. somebody asked if there were any special laws in massachusetts, and somehow that got to someone asking about the age of consent in MA, which meant that at least half the people in the room turned around and looked at me. i have no idea how word traveled that quickly that i'm only 16, but so many people knew it by the first night. finally, the meeting ended. i worked with ben and a bunch of other people to finish putting together the puzzle of the foam puzzle pieces we had to decorate over the summer. a couple people never turned in a piece, which made it a lot hard. went to andrew's room (which has "a couch the size of texas") and talked to matt for a while about stuyvescent (sp?) (where he went) and broadway and olin and other stuff. he lives in 314, which is awesome. i want to live in room 314. eventually we realized we were quite tired and went back to our rooms. i unpacked some more stuff, took a shower, and went to bed.

and so ended day one of college.
