My in-service this Thursday will be on conversion disorder, factitious disorders (eg Munchausen's), and malingering (faking). It is fascinating stuff, and I'm loving this topic. I think my favorite part so far is the diagnostic tests to determine "non-organic" pain complaints. Some differentiate simply between organic & non-organic, and some specifically target malingering. After all the special tests we've learned in school to rule out or diagnose specific conditions, I think it's fun and cool to diagnose and rule out liars (or people with psych issues, at best). I even found a test my instructor hadn't heard of! I tried it out on Tony, telling him only "pretend this leg is weak when I tell you to do things with it." I then performed the test on him but didn't tell him what I was looking for, and lo! He got a big ol' positive on it :D
It's my last week at this location, and then I'm off to Westlake for the last 7 weeks of PT school! Well, I have the exit exam to take on the 24th first. I've kind of lightly studied for it, which I think is more than many people have done. I can't believe I'm this close, and I'll believe it even less in 8 weeks. I've gotten a lot more comfortable with outpatient/orthopedic patients, though I still don't like sports rehab.
I should probably write all this down in my final self-assessment rather than here.
