Eggs

Hi! I’m a long-time lurker and would like to contribute my thoughts on one thing: dragon eggs.

Eragon first touches Saphira’s egg in the Spine. And now let’s do some maths:

He takes one day (page 9) to get to the edge of the “precipitous ravine”. For the remaining distance to Carvahall two days (page 10) pass. Then the harvesting day follows, and eight days later there is this vicious blizzard (page 21).
“Days later the storm finally passed…” I’ll count three days, though CP lets it sound as if the storm went on for a week. (page 21)
“On the eighth morning…” I suppose it’s the eighth morning after the storm. Roran looks for signs of the traders (page 21). The next day they spend in Carvahall (page 22ff). In the following night Saphira hatches. (pages 36/37)

24 days. From somewhere in Eragon or Eldest I know that in the days of the Riders they used to queue up potential new Riders to touch the eggs. Did they wait 24 days to see whether something’s happening after a person touched it, or where those dragons a bit faster in reacting than Saphira?
Or maybe it wasn’t Eragon’s touch awakening her, but that of Sloan, Garrow, Roran or Merlock? Consider the possibilities, the plot twists, the… Well, won’t happen, huh?
