Oh, the wonderful world of sadomasochism...
If you read any of the British newspapers, you're likely very familiar with the case involving Max Mosley, the president of Formula One's governing body the FIA. For those of you who missed out, Mr. Mosley is suing
News of the World who filmed him being whipped by several women in a 'prison-guard' scenario.
News of the World alleged the video had Nazi undertones claiming the women spoke to him in German and pretended to be concentration camp guards. Mosley wholly denies this (hence the suit) but him being the son of British fascist leader Oswald Mosley doesn't exactly help his cause.
Though Max considers his penchant for sadomasochism an "unfortunate interest" (which probably explains why he kept it from his wife) he admitted to doing S & M for forty-five years (!!!) and said, "if it hadn't been for bribery and illegal acts this wouldn't have come out."
Now... all privacy issues aside, my real problem with the story is how some members of the British media handled it. One particular tool from
BBC News who shares my real first name, wrote an article on sadomasochism without any of my knowledge of the matter...
Who said the British were smarter and more progressive than us again? Relax Brits... I got love for you.
To be clear... I don't have a dungeon in my basement or a 'sub' who might blow me while I write this (I really should work on the latter). At the same time, as someone with sadistic tendencies, I've happily tied up a willing partner and delight when my current wants to be my 'bitch' during roleplaying. Point being, while I've dabbled and researched the vast, painfully pleasurable (sorry... I had to) of the S & M lifestyle, I would be a liar to call myself an expert.
However, to be as woefully ignorant as this journalist and the 'guardians of traditional morality,' is pretty much inexcusable in the information age we live in. I'm not saying you have to agree with it, just don't be an idiot about it if you don't.
As one might expect, the tragic murder of film agent Rod Hall in 2004 during a 'play session' served as an example of how the practice can be "unconstructive" (I didn't even know that was a word) as the Christian Action Research and Education said. CARE had more to say which is just too ridiculous to pay any attention to... not like there's any surprise to the Christian opinion. Though I do find it kind of ironic that a lot of people (Catholics stand up...) get their first taste of spanking in Christian school... fine for non-consenting children apparently (by adults) but not for consenting adults (by other adults).
Irony I think they call it...
