engadget isn't on my LJ feed list...

...but that hardly matters since THE FEEDS STILL AREN'T WORKING ON LIVEJOURNAL.

Gah.

Anyway, whilst most of the anticipatory Micro$oft hoo-hah concerns the launch next month of Windows 7 (an operating system which increasingly makes its predecessor, Windows Vista, resemble the similarly premature and malformed Windows Millennium Edition, prior to the release of XP), another Redmond campus beast is lumbering into view: Windows Mobile 6.5. The coup this time for the revamped OS is that not only are several equipment manufacturers ready to launch products based around it, but major US service providers are also onboard in a co-ordinated way:

Only a churlish cynic might point to the curious recent revival of Windows CE on some lower-end netbooks*, and the forthcoming appearance of Motorola/T-Mobile's Android-powered Cliq device (http://www.allbusiness.com/marketing-advertising/marketing-advertising/12942535-1.html), and suggest that the sector is still hedging its bets. With Apple ballsing-up the release of Snow Leopard, and RIM experiencing their own techie problems (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/09/16/blackberry-tour-mired-by-trackball-problems-verizon-losing-pati/), nothing is certain, and I fully appreciate why some people are wisely suggesting that waiting for the first service packs might be a good idea...

*This gizmo, for example, is another definition-breaker, but neatly demonstrates how the Windows CE OS is being given a new lease of life:
