The Professor and I spent part of today gathering information: we went to a Major Department StoreTM to look at things that might conceivably go on a wedding gift registry. We haven't decided whether we're actually going to register someplace or not. Although I suppose it is a convenient way to tell people which colors of bath towels we like, it strikes me as being a hideous exercise in greed. I mean, I'm still dealing with the finances of being a student, which means ramen for many meals a week, so it seems preposterous to be asking anyone to give me fancy matched silverware with which to eat it.
The last time either of us was in a huge downtown department store, the floor staff would have assumed (correctly) that we were some kind of high-school jerks who had cut class and taken a bus to the city out of boredom. Today the salesmen asked us quite politely if they could help us find anything. Still it was kind of fun, if disconcerting, to take the escalators up many floors and wander around and sit on the tasteful furniture and pretend we were about to move into the kind of place that would justify buying a giant leather couch.
Help! We've turned into grown-ups!
