Daniel Widmore was never a big believer in déjà vu.
The occasional coincidence happened upon him every so often, but this was different.
It started with the dreams. Dreams that seemed so familiar, yet he couldn’t place his finger on their origin. Flashes of green, some he could surmise as vast oceans of trees. A redheaded beauty responsible for his nightly heart scares. He sweats like he was somewhere else, somewhere warm and humid and calm. Not asleep in the coolness of his penthouse in the middle of autumn in the heart of Los Angeles.
When he opens his eyes, words are at the tip of his tongue, yet he cannot say them and they disappear in the darkness.
A week later, he sees her again, the beautiful girl that haunted both his dreams and his waking hours. He approaches her and finds she is transfixed by a painting of Faust. His fingers lightly tap against his leg, recalling an opera by the same name. He had played some of it as a child and had forgotten it long ago, but the notes return to him as if it was only yesterday.
It must take a lot for a man to sign his life over to the Devil, she coolly remarks, as if they were already in the middle of a conversation. Personally, I’m not the type of girl to commit to such a lifelong endeavor.
Nothing’s forever, he replies simply.
She looks over at him and smiles meekly. No, I suppose not.
She pauses and allows a momentary silence to pass between them.
I’m Charlotte, by the way.
He stuttered as a child, but that was fixed by an expensive therapist and his mother‘s haughty determination. And it was all unraveled by those bright blue eyes.
D-Dan. My name’s Dan.
He asks Charlotte to dinner and she holds his hand as he walks her up to her apartment. A week later, she kisses his trembling lips and he feels like he’s done this before. A month later, they awake in each other’s arms after a night of sushi and Don Quixote.
Daniel Widmore finally realizes that -- perhaps -- they were really meant to be.
