As they drag across her skin, his teeth remind her of all the words (all the lies) that slither past his lips. These broken promises are etched into her skin, one at a time, until the scars feel like home and she’s unable remember how they got there in the first place.
Some days, it rains and drips of water splatter and seep into these scars, stinging her as wild, untamed moans creep past her cracked lips. He hushes her with his own mouth, (he’s long past the methods of fists and fury and fear) but only because the small monster in the pit of his stomach tells him to. Something like pity glazes over his eyes and in these small moments, he can’t but grant mercy upon this wretched thing once called Claire.
Like him, she once had a name, but the wind swept it away, along with her innocence.
What’s your name? Everyday, she asks him this as the rain settles into a light shower and everyday, she gets the same answer. Teeth dig into her bottom lip and the taste of blood stains her tongue. His thumb drags roughly across her mouth and leaves a red trail along her jawline.
And she knows this is the only truth she’ll ever get out of him.
