I watched "Fever Pitch" tonight, based on the book by Nick Hornsby. I've read quite a few of his books, and they all had a similar theme - bloke reflects on life, grows a little, realises that love isn't perfect and life's problems need to be addressed but his relationship is a good one, and happy ending together.
And then I started thinking about all the books I've read that are lumped together as "chic lit." What do they have in common? Woman reflects on her life, does some growing, realises that love isn't perfect and life's problems need to be addressed, but her relationship is a good one, and happy ending.
So why do we need a category called "chic lit" when it's about women, but we don't have "dick lit" when it's about men? With the corresponding idea that somehow it's not proper literature, just a genre of lightweight easy reading fluff?
