San Diego is beautiful this time of year. The weather is perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Hopefully it'll be like this for most of the winter. It's track jacket weather.
Last night Mel and I went to see Thrice, Underoath, The Bled, and Veda. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to. It was at the legendary SOMA where many bands got their start. The place is pretty damn big and the sound was incredible. Much better than that shopping center in West Palm Beach, which I forgot the name to. The place was packed, and because Thrice is so big in So Cal, they're playing again today, which I wouldn't mind going to.
Anyways, the first band was Veda. A female lead band where the girl plays guitar and piano. She has a really good voice and the music was very good too. We bought their CD after the show and the lead singer was the one selling the merch, which I thought was a very personable thing to do.
The next band was The Bled, which I was excited to see. Their performance was very good, although sloppier than the rest of the bands. Like most bands, they're much tighter on CD.
Then Underoath came on, which was awesome of course. They played a couple of new songs, which were really good. Normally I hate when bands play new songs, but if the song is good, I always enjoy it. Since the sound was pristine, I have a different impression of their live shows. The last time I saw them in pompano, the sound system sucked, which made them sound like a shitty live band. But they were very very good. My only complaint was they didn't play "Reinventing Your Exit" which I thought was a fucken crime. But I guess there are many reasons why bands refuse to play their more commercial friendly songs. Anyways, I'm convince the keyboard player doesn't really do anything in the band other than the occassional button push. He's like the skanking guy in the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. What also pissed me off is they re-released their last album with like 5 new songs and a dvd with over 2 hours of music. That pisses me off when bands do that because it doesn't favor the fans that ran out and bought their cd when it first comes out. So many bands have been doing that lately and I think it's shitty because I'm not going to pay another 10 or 12 dollars to re-buy and album with a few more songs. The used, dashboard, the killers have all done that too. I know that both Thrice and Underoath are Christian bands, although Thrice refuses to admit it anymore haha. But there are Christian bands that I think are awesome and Underoath and As I Lay Dying are just a couple of them. Underoath did say something which made me respect them as people rather than just musicians. After the the show, the lead singer thanked Jesus Christ like he always does, but he did say, "I know that's not a popular belief with a lot of you, but we totally understand that. What ever your beliefs or interests are, weather it's vegetarin, vegan, or Buddhism, we totally respect that." I loved their music before, but that definitely made me a fan for life.
Thrice was the headliner, and they openned new song, which is going to be their next single, and truthfully I'm not a fan of it, and I'm sure after a while Thrice won't play the song live anymore either like they do with their first single from the last album. They played 6 new songs, which no one knew because the album comes out in 2 weeks, but still everyone enjoyed. A few of them were hard, but most of them were suprisingly mellow, with an evil sounding Fender Rhodes piano and a Hammond organ replacing many guitar parts. Thrice is definitely a maturing band, and I see the new direction they're taking, and I love it. They played for like an hour and a half, which was awesome and Dustin played an accoustic version of "Staring at the Sun." Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.
Sorry, no spelling or grammar check today, or ever. ADD enables me to write and write for years, but when it comes to reading, even my own shit, I can't seem to concentrate.
