i dunno...i like reading ethnographies, but its the theoretical stuff that bores me to tears...like historical particularism vs. neofunctionalism vs. post-post modernism (or something like that). Ugh. Have you ever read "Saints, Scholars and Schizophrenics"? It's Nancy Scheper-Hughes' ethnography about a Irish village and all of its sexual hangups, insanity, et cetera. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. It was really interesting even though I'm a little iffy on her in general and her crazy ideas about "militant anthropology". Kind of an oxymoron, don't you think? I can't think of a group of people less inclined towards militancy (if that's even a word...being militant, at any rate).
I think I'm going to go ahead and register online so that I save the ten dollars or whatever. I'm a little excited about this "distinguished speaker dinner". Sounds so important. When I went with my dad to a convention in Seattle, I missed the speaker at the banquet on account of I drank too much wine beforehand. I won't this time.
