It was already a quarter of the way through before I came upon it on TV. It's called "Sleepers" (out 1996), it's set from the late 1960s-80s and, judging by their accents, is in New York. When I tuned in, the four friends, about 14, were in the Wilkinson's Home for Boys, a juvenile disciplinary facility. They endure various forms of abuse from the guards of the prison, which I won't reveal in the hopes that you folks may one day see it with me, but I'm guessing you can imagine what went on. They're held for a year, but it's pretty obvious they won't soon forget what happened. The movie then flashes 13 years later, 1981, and you see how the boys' lives were impacted and how they seek to get back at the people who ruined them.
The movie features Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt among others. I cried many times throughout it. Not for people who want a happy ending. I loved it.
