So my mother has conned me into helping with the play she's currently involved in. One of the local theatres is doing Into the woods, and I have been waylaid into helping run spotlight. *shudders* Lots of strange people I don't know. *whimpers* Naturally the whole thing is a bit chaotic. I get my spot cues last night, and the person on the other spot wasn't there. Keep in mind that this was only the second night I had been there, and the previous day I had only been shown the barest basics on how to run the light. I'm sitting up there, in the dark, trying to leaf through this stack of photocopies of the entire script, trying to make out pencil written cues. Now let's discuss my seat. You see, I'm clear up in the top of the balcony, and where the light is set up, I can't properly run it by standing on the left side. Well, maybe I could if I wasn't a southpaw, dunno. Actually, no, I have to be on the right, don't think the second handle thing is on the left side. At any rate, it's sitting right next to the rows of seats, up against the two little steps going into the one row. So if I stand on the steps, one, I can't reach the one handle on the light, and two, I'd be towering over it. So, completely useless standing. So I must sit. The issue is finding a seat. The only one available that even remotely works is to sit on the top of the back of the row of seats. Now, the edge of the chair, and my bony arse, not a good match. *whimpers* I swear I'm bruised now. Perhaps tonight I shall take a pillow so I don't break my poor rear. And another thing! When you're depending on following what's going on in the play for your cues, and the actors skip lines, not good! *groans* I don't really want to go back, but I will. The guy who seems to be in charge of us tech types seems rather frustrated with me, but then again, he seems frustrated with everyone. Silly uptight theatre people. At least the director and assistant director, a husband/wife team seem to be pretty nice and easy to work with. The asst. director, he's the one who I really have to deal with on when I need to spot and not and all. We'll see how he reacts tonight when I come in with my own notes on when I need to be spotting where, and my tons of questions on his cue marks. *grins* Could be interesting, could be horrifying. Now off to eat chinese with mother. Someone save me!
