Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?

"Even then, does anything written ever matter
To the earth, the wind, and sky?"
-Joy Harjo

Waiting to post until something happened worth posting about is like waiting for life to get exciting before living; sometimes you just have to deal with the lackluster and wait for brilliance to strike. Really, I am an intensely private person, especially online. I am also incredibly busy because I am a college student taking summer classes, part full time, and also have (gasp!) a social life. However, the latter of those three is alot less demanding during the summer, when most of my friends are scattered around the state. My real life will no doubt become overwhelmingly crazy in the fall, but in the summer, I have more time on my hands then I know what to do with. My nerdiness comes out in full swing. Yay for procrastination and Livejournal!

What I Will Use This Journal For:
I got an LJ in January to follow ontd_startrek. I am a HUGE trekkie, but only for TOS, TNG, and the new Abrams movie as I haven't seen any of the other series yet. My other fandoms include Skins (UK), Daria, M*A*S*H, and occasionally Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter. I am testing the waters of the South Park fandom with a very cautious toe. For me, fanfiction is like the ultimate exemplification of postmodernism. I believe the ultimate value of a story is in what it expresses from the heart of its writer and strikes within the reader. Whether or not the story counts as "canon" is beside the point. Shakespeare was, in my opinion, the world's greatest fan fiction writer-most of his stories were blatantly ripped off/inspired by other tales. His plays also tended to be a million times better than the source material. For a long time I avoided fanfiction because I am an English major (doubling with philosophy) and was always a bit of a reading snob. If it wasn't well written, I refused to read it. Now, however, humbled by postmodernism, disgusted with the pretension I find in my college's literature department, and totally comfortable with my geekiness, I've decided to start collecting and (possibly!) writing my own stuff.

I'm also going to use this journal to keep up with my really geeky interests, because, really, life is too short not to seize whatever joy you can. Everybody needs a hobby. Like I said earlier, when life gets too hectic, I won't have as much time to be a nerd. Well, actually, I will...but it'll be the kind of nerdy that I get rewarded with good grades and maybe scholarships for :)

I'm also willing to talk to other nerds about our mutual passions. I'm willing to beta for anyone, so if you write for one of the fandoms I mentioned above, hit me up. I'm dyslexic, so if you catch numerous spelling/punctuation errors in this journal, that's why. However, even though I make grammatical mistakes myself, I can catch the mistakes of other people and other english majors have told me I am a good editor. If I don't divulge too much info about myself online, don't be offended. I'm very shy in real life, too. Also, if I ignore you, it's not on purpose. If you message me or comment on one of my posts, I will ALWAYS respond. If I don't, it's because real life is too busy and I haven't had time to get on my LJ.

What I WON'T use this journal for:
I also won't use this journal to rant about the things I am passionate about-feminism, philosophy, literature, queer theory, and so on. Why? Because I am 19. There is a section in Plato's Parmenides (yeah, I'm about to reeeeally nerd out on you) where the aged titular philosopher tells a young, assertive Socrates that "philosophy has not gripped him by the throat" because Socrates is over-sure to assert his own view of the world and has not been trained in the art of question. It is over the course of this long, tedious, actually pretty miserable dialogue that Socrates painstaking learns the difference between being a philosopher and a student of philosophy.
In short: I'm 19. I'm a kid. I keep an open mind and use logic and reason and question everything. I believe what I believe strongly, BUT I will probably not be writing about my passions here because I may someday change my mind.
I will also not use this journal for any of my original fiction or poetry. That I will keep to myself and a few select friends:)
Anyway, this is my intro to LJ. I know NOBODY is reading this as I write it, but if somehow you have found your way here, welcome. I hope the art here finds you well :)
