Title:
It was like an unspoken rule: they never touched.
Hibari had seen them bicker (well, needle on Gokudera's part and laugh on Yamamoto's part) until they were literally millimeters apart from bonking noses, but yet they never touched. Even when they walked there was a very slight, very real distance between their shoulders as they walked pretty much at the same pace.
"Let's have your back looked at when we get back home."
"Mind your own fucking business, Yama-baka."
Yamamoto would get that weird look in his eye, like he didn't know whether to laugh or look away piteously, but in the end always settled for doing nothing.
They always did nothing.
Not when they were stuck on assignment together for a month (he almost thought that was that herbivore's doing, though there was no way of proving it since the assignment was to retrieve their kidnapped boss), and Hibari had been keeping tabs. Not when they got drunk and locked in a closet together. Not even when they were snowed in on a mountain (also that herbivore's doing) and couldn't get through to Dino to send the helicopter, no matter how many times they tried.
There was always that little distance between them that the so-called 'sword-brat' was too leery to cross and that Hibari, if he'd been any denser, would've thought Gokudera was entirely unaware of.
How could two idiots that were thick as thieves in any other instance not be able to take that one little step closer that Hibari could see both of them wanted to take?
------------
He was wrong.
Oh, Yamamoto was well aware of the various troubles people had gone through to set him and Gokudera up. There had been the time when Ryohei back out of going to a sausage factory where a man kept on pushing samples on him and Gokudera. And the time when Squalo and Xanxus had 'accidentally' dropped the key to their underground training center into a suspiciously nonexisting drainpipe in order to keep them trapped together for hours in the rising water (but that might've just been Xanxus' sadism at work). And of course every time Hibari and him sparred, he just had to send him flying into Gokudera every time.
One time when Kusakabe got really, really drunk he slurred something about them never touching, which had Yamamoto totally confused. They didn't touch? They did all the time. He would take Gokudera's paperwork. Gokudera would hit him. He would steal Gokudera's favorite pastry for his partner and get a whap cuz I just ate this yesterday, stupid!. But of course he knew Gokudera would eat it anyway.
He'd turn on the radio to the right station and Gokudera would glare at him. He'd get Gokudera a sandwich for lunch when he forgot to eat and Gokudera would snarl as he scarfed it down. People said he was turning into a workaholic version of Xanxus.
Then they'd go home and when Gokudera fell asleep on the couch with his glasses barely hanging off of his nose, he'd scoop up his partner and cradle him close on the way to bed. Sometimes Gokudera would see who it was and would only nudge him a little with his nose as if to say, Sorry man. But most of the time he just let himself be held.
He got his soft cuddlies from the girls, from Tsuna, even from Squalo and Hibari. He had contacts with a lot of people and since he was the hitman of the group he was almost always free outside of assignments. Gokudera, however, was in the office all the time - working, drinking his nauseatingly black coffee, screaming at people on the phone, kneading the space between his eyebrows as if he could nurse his headache away. It was Yamamoto's mission in life to claim at least an hour to toss Gokudera outside and prevent all attempts to get back inside during that time.
If it wasn't for his perserverance then Gokudera wouldn't come slipping into his bed after all the lights were out. He wouldn't twine his arms around Yamamoto shyly, as if he still wasn't sure he was supposed to be here. He wouldn't seek Yamamoto's mouth and drink it in as if he was helpless to stop his kisses from happening.
Sometimes they only touched, and other times it was...more. Nobody knew that they didn't need to touch during the day; they did plenty at night. They didn't know Gokudera could touch him just as well as any other human being might.
He'd given up explaining, since they all thought they knew better. But this - this was his and Gokudera's little secret. In the dark when they talked about the day's crazy events in Gokudera's eyes he'd see a little of the boy he'd fallen in love with, surfacing below all the stress and pressure of his position.
He'd know in that instant that somehow, they brought each other joy.
